FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — It wasn’t an absolute groundbreaking performance from KJ Jefferson on Saturday against Kent State. But, the Sardis, (Miss.) native is still one of the most consistent quarterbacks in the nation. He completed 13 of 19 passes for 136 yards and 2 touchdowns while not turning the ball over for the second consecutive week. Jefferson has been solid in a new offense under Dan Enos that is more of a pro-style attack while still completing 74-percent of his passses.
Jefferson was less than a point away from being the best QB rated right behind Heisman contender, JJ McCarthy. The Michigan passer completed 88-percent of his passes for 278 yards and 2 TD against UNLV last week.
Last year’s Heisman winner, Caleb Williams, had an electric performance against Stanford completing 19 of 21 passes for 281 yards and 2 TD. The USC QB has yet to throw an interception this season while completing 79-percent of his passes.
While Arkansas hasn’t played quite the level of defense that BYU employs, this will be Jefferson first real test in a new offensive scheme. The Cougars have only allowed 204 ypg through the air. However they have yet to play an offensive as sophisticated as what the Hogs will run. Jefferson will need his transfer receivers like Isaac TeSlaa and Andrew Armstrong to continue performing or exceeding the level they have been the first two weeks. If they do, Arkansas’ star QB could be in for another big week in the PFF ratings.
How does Pro Football Focus calculate their grades for quarterbacks?
Accuracy and decision-making are all baked into the play-by-play grading, with positive grades being earned on passes that lead to first downs and more. The system accounts for the timing and difficulty of the throw, while also gauging the decision-making with respect to the quarterback’s progression on a given play. -Pro Football Focus
