Great news coming to the Razorback coaching staff with assistant coach, Gus Argenal becoming a head coach again.
Argenal returns to the state of California taking the head job at Cal State San Bernardino. He takes the job after being at Arkansas the past two seasons.
California State-San Bernidino is a division two program called the Coyotes. They finished this past season with a 31-4 overall record and a berth in the Final Four.
Here’s what Argenal said during a press release from Arkansas’ communication department this morning:
“I could not be more excited to be a part of a campus community that gives its student-athletes an elite collegiate experience,” Argenal said. “Coyote basketball has a storied tradition of winning in the [California Collegiate Athletic Association] and on the national stage; my goal is to build an incredible culture of winning, in and out of the classroom through hard work, brotherhood, and passion. My team will be aggressive and attack on both sides of the ball utilizing a position-less style that takes advantage of mismatches and plays with great pace for 40 minutes.”
Since joining the Razorback staff, Arkansas has reached the Elite Eight and Sweet 16. Duriny the two seasons, the Razorbacks are 50-23 overall.
PROFILE:
Prior to coaching, Argenal was a point guard at UC Davis and still holds the Aggies single-game record with 13 assists. He led the Aggies in assists and steals as a senior and helped the 2003-04 team post an 18-9 record. He received his undergraduate degree in history from UCD in 2004 and earned a master’s degree in education from Arizona State in 2005.
A Concord, Calif., native, Argenal was recently voted among the “50 Most Impactful High Major Assistants in Division 1 Basketball” by Silver Waves Media. During his two seasons at Nevada, the Wolf Pack won two Mountain West titles, reached two NCAA tournaments, including a Sweet 16 berth, and reached as high as No. 5 in the nation.
