Former Arkansas OC provided fuel for Sanders’ historic performance

Colorado’s victory against the national champion runner-up TCU shocked a lot of people on Saturday. Coach Deion Sanders took a team that finished 1-11 in 2022 to Fort Worth and went toe-to-toe (no pun intended) with the Horned Frogs. As Hog fans, you might wonder why this matters to you at all.

Arkansas ties

There were multiple connections between the two programs and Arkansas. Myles Slusher and Jordan Domineck both left to join coach Prime in Boulder following the 2022 season. Former Arkansas head coach Chad Morris’ son and former Arkansas commit, Chandler Morris is the starting quarterback for TCU. And last but certainly not least, former offensive coordinator Kendal Briles is now the OC for the Horned Frogs.

For Hog fans, watching players/coaches that left the team high and dry go after each other could bring up some mixed feelings. On one hand, they get to watch one group lose. On the other hand, they have to see one group succeed away from Fayetteville. However, I think I can speak for most when I say this—seeing Briles lose his first game did our collective hearts good, especially after Arkansas dropped the most points ever under Sam Pittman against Western Carolina. And it was even more poetic that the two former Hogs at Colorado were the pair that put the game away.

KB vs Shedeur Sanders

One of the more interesting storylines, however, was one that no one outside of coach Sanders and his son knew. As a recruit, Shedeur Sanders went to a camp at Florida State. At that time, Kendal Briles was the OC/quarterbacks coach for the Noles. According to an interview with coach Prime, Shadeur was ignored by the former Arkansas coordinator.

The reason he was so intense, and so relaxed and ready, not only did he study, but when we went to the camp of a certain school and this certain coordinator we just played against—he’s the offensive coordinator—he was at that school…and he didn’t pay [Shedeur] no attention. I don’t he even think barely spoke to him.

Sanders had the last laugh as he put on a performance any offensive coordinator would love to have. He went 38/47 and put up 510 yards for four touchdown. His 510 yards was good enough to break the single game record for Colorado.
