When you hear about tailgating around the SEC many fans will recommend LSU, ‘The Grove’ at Ole Miss, Tennessee or Texas A&M as leaders. But, Arkansas’ is one of the underrated spots for tailgating in the country.
The Setting
The hills and mountainous terrain surrounding the stadium creates a beautiful environment to eat, drink and socialize with your fellow Razorback fans. There are several tailgates walking around the outside of the campus. With plenty of houses to park at and parties going on that fellow fans will invite you to there are plenty of reasons why Arkansas is a solid tailgate.
Fall is the best time and scene around these parts. Colors changing amongst several of the trees. The cool breezes or crisp fall afternoons are some of the more enjoyable weather days you’ll find in America. Beers and incredible eats make Fayetteville elite in the tailgate game.
Hog Town
Now with the new HogTown Street Festival, fans can enjoy free pre-game festivities right in the heart of the action, just a few long passes from the Home of the Razorbacks.
HogTown, to be located on Maple Street just north of Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium, will start four hours prior to each game and conclude 30 minutes prior to kickoff. This fan-friendly event will feature a variety of fan activities, including a main stage with live music, a larger than life videoboard featuring college football games from around the country, a beer garden, food trucks from throughout Northwest Arkansas, interactive corporate sponsored activations for fans and fun kid activities, including inflatables, balloon artists, face painting and more. Fans will also be able to get autographs from current and former Razorback student-athletes. Hog Heaven, the official team store of Razorback Athletics, will have a mobile trailer store offering the latest Arkansas Razorbacks gameday attire.
Fans in attendance can join the Razorback Spirit Squads, Tusk V and the Best in Sight and Sound – the University of Arkansas Marching Band – in welcoming the team to the stadium with the ‘Hog Walk’, followed by a pep rally performance from the stage. -Arkansas Razorback Website
The Fan Interaction
About two hours before a game there is the Hog Walk where Razorback fans welcome the team into the stadium. Fans surround both sides of the main entrance into the parking lot of Razorback Stadium. Most of the time fans are led in the traditional Hog Call by ESPN fan hall of famer, Canaan Sandy. There are parking spaces on both sides of the driveway where fans can also tailgate. When Arkansas has won in the past or hosted huge games the lot would be full of tailgaters.
There have also been open basketball practices in Bud Walton Arena where fans can enjoy watching the team leading up to gametime on cool or cold fall evenings in Fayetteville.
Most gamedays there is a vibe that only Hog fans are familiar with. When the Razorbacks are good there seems to be a roar in the air as fans generate excitement walking into the venue. Razorback Stadium has to be one of the more underrated places to watch a game in country. The makeup of brick and glass makes the stadium a gorgeous one. The roar of a ‘Woo Pig Sooie’ rumbles through the mountains of the Ozarks, too, making it one of the best destinations for home and visiting fans. Arkansan’s are some of the more hospitable in the conference, too. They often welcome opposing teams fans to their tailgates.
As long as Pittman has Arkansas floating around 8 wins or more, Hog fans will continue to flow into Fayetteville with the anticipation of seeing something special and having a good time while doing so.
