Arkansas defeats LSU, 5-4: Updates, scores, highlights from SEC Tournament

The 2-seed Diamond Hogs (40-15, 20-10)  face off against the 3-seed LSU Tigers (43-13, 19-10) with a trip to the SEC Tournament Semifinals on the line. Thursday’s matchup is the fourth meeting between the two teams this season. Back in late March, LSU won the season series in Baton Rouge, 2-1. The Tigers also have an edge over Arkansas in the all-time series, 77-40.

First pitch is set for 4:30 p.m. and can be seen on the SEC Network. The winner of today’s game will advance to the semifinals (single-elimination) on Saturday. The loser will return tomorrow to face Texas A&M in an elimination game at 3:00 p.m.

1st Inning

Top – LSU

  • Dylan Crews goes down swinging in just three pitches for the first out of the game.
  • Josh Pearson also goes down swinging at a Hagen Smith slider for the second out.
  • Tommy White gets on base with a grounder into left field.
  • Hayden Travinski hits a fly ball into shallow right field. Bohrofen can’t get to it and Travinski gets on base. White advances to third.
  • Tre Morgan hits a blooper over Harold Coll and drives in a run. LSU leads 1-0
  • Smith is able to get out of the inning by striking Jordan Thompson out swinging. Smith’s third strikeout of the inning.

Bottom – Arkansas

  • Tavian Josenberger gets on base with a lead-off walk to start the game.
  • Kendall Diggs hits a routine fly ball into right field which is caught by Jobert for the first out of the inning.
  • Paul Skenes nearly picks off Josenberger at first. Bohrofen hits a line drive to short and Thompson makes an incredible leaping catch for the out and nearly turns a double play at first.
  • Skenes catches Wegner looking with a full count for the final out of the inning.

 

2nd Inning

Top – LSU

  • Brayden Jobert strikes out swinging at a filthy slider from Smith for the first out of the frame.
  • Smith picks up his fifth strikeout of the day as he catches Gavin Dugas looking for the second out.
  • Alex Milazzo hits a dribbler up the third base line and Cali makes the play to retire the Tigers.

Bottom – Arkansas

  • Brady Slavens sends a fly ball into right field, but Jobert is there to make the out.
  • Cali sends a line drive to short and Thompson makes the play for the second out of the inning.
  • Peyton Holt continues his hot streak with a two-out base hit into shallow right.
  • Harold Coll sends a ground ball to short and Thompson sends it to first to end the inning.

 

3rd Inning

Top – LSU

  • Hagen Smith is in the zone as he gets Crews out swinging for the first out of the frame.
  • Pearson ends a grounder to first and Slavens is there to make the play for the second out.
  • Smith retires White on just three pitches to end the inning. It’s Smith’s seventh strikeout of the game.

Bottom – Arkansas

  • Rowland is hit by a Skenes breaking ball to get him on base to start the inning.
  • Josenberger sends a fly ball into right field but Jobert is there to make the play for the first out of the inning.
  • Skenes catches Diggs swinging for the second out of the inning.
  • Bohrofen is caught looking at a 99 MPH fastball for his third strike and third out of the inning.

 

4th Inning

Top – LSU

  • Travinski hits a one-hopper off the glove of Coll into left field and makes it to first safely. It’s Travinski’s second hit of the game.
  • Morgan sends Smith’s fastball up the left field gap and gets on base. Two runners on and no outs for the Hogs.
  • Thompson strikes out swinging for the first out of the frame.
  • Smith picks up his ninth strikeout of the game as Jobert swings and misses at a 2-2 slider.
  • Smith walks Dugas to load the bases for LSU with two outs. RHP Hunter Hollan enters for Hagen Smith. 
  • Travinski gets home on a wild pitch from Hollan. LSU leads 2-0
  • Hollan is able to strike Milazzo out swinging to get out of the jam and end the inning.

Bottom – Arkansas

  • Skenes hits his second batter of the day as Wegner gets on base to start the inning.
  • Slavens tops a ground ball up the middle for a base hit. Wegner advances to third with no outs.
  • Cali sends one into right field and it drops for a hit. Wegner scores. Slavens is nearly picked off at second, but Thompson can’t hold on. LSU leads 2-1
  • Facing a full count, Peyton Holt sends a ground ball up the middle to bring Slavens home. Tie Game 2-2
  • Coll sends a fly ball into deep center which is caught by Crews for the first out of the inning.
  • Skenes walks Rowland to load the bases for the Razorbacks.
  • After a lengthy battle with Skenes, Josenberger pops one up in the infield where Dugas makes the play for the second out of the inning. LHP Riley Cooper enters for Paul Skenes.
  • Diggs flies out to center field, but catcher’s interference is called. LSU challenges the call, but it’s upheld and all players advance one base. Arkansas leads 3-2
  • Bohrofen makes LSU pay for the catcher’s interference. He hits a ground ball passed Dugas to score two runners. Bohrofen on first, Diggs advances to third. Arkansas leads 5-2
  • Wegner grounds out to second where Dugas makes the play to end the inning. Arkansas strands two but scores four runs to take the lead.

5th Inning

Top – LSU

  • Crews sends a ground ball to third where Cali is there to make the play for the first out of the inning.
  • Hollan strikes Pearson out swinging for the second out of the frame.
  • White goes down on a 1-2 breaking ball to end the inning as Hollan makes quick work of the Tigers.

Bottom – Arkansas

  • Slavens flies out to left field for the first out of the inning.
  • Cali sends a fly ball into deep right field but Jobert makes the play for the second out.
  • Holt sends another fly ball into deep right field but Jobert makes a leaping catch at the warning track to end the inning.

 

6th Inning

Top – LSU

  • Travinski hits a lead-off single into left field to start the inning.
  • Morgan follows Travinski’s lead again as he hits a single into center field.
  • Thompson grounds into a fielder’s choice at short where Holt makes an incredible double play by catching Travinski too far away from third. Holt sent it to Cali, who made the tag on Travinski and completed the 6-4-5 double play.
  • Jobert sends a fly ball into right field and Bohrofen ends the inning.

Bottom – Arkansas

  • Coll leads off with an infield pop-up to short for the first out of the frame.
  • Rowland strikes out looking for the second out.
  • Cooper makes quick work of the Hogs as he gets Josenberger swinging to end the inning.

 

7th Inning

Top – LSU

  • Dugas sends a line drive to short where Coll makes a diving catch. Coll fires it to Slavens for the out. Umpires review the play and overturn the call, meaning Dugas is safe at first.
  • Milazzo strikes out swinging at a 2-2 breaking ball. Hollan now has four strikeouts on the day.
  • Crews and Hollan have a lengthy 9-pitch battle that ends with Crews being walked. Two on base for the Tigers with one out.
  • Pearson strikes out swinging on just three pitches for the second out.
  • White grounds out to third as Cali makes the play and ends the frame.

Bottom – Arkansas

  • Diggs grounds out to short for the first out of the inning.
  • Bohrofen goes down swinging for the second out of the frame. Cooper has three strikeouts on the day.
  • Wegner follows Bohrofen and goes down swinging to end the inning.

 

8th Inning

Top – LSU

  • Travinski leads off with a single hit well into left field.
  • Hollan is able to strike Morgan out swinging for the first out of the inning.
  • Travinski advances to second following a wild pitch that got away from Rowland. Thompson hits one into left field for a single that scores Travinski. Arkansas leads 5-3
  • Jobert flies out into deep center field for the second out.
  • Hollan catches Dugas swinging to end the frame. He has seven strikeouts on the game.

Bottom – Arkansas

  • Slavens strikes out swinging for the first out of the frame.
  • Cali drills a ground ball into right field for a single.
  • In a full count, Holt gets struck out swinging for the second out.
  • Cooper needs just three pitches to retire Coll, who strikes out looking to end the inning.

 

9th Inning

Top – LSU

  • Jared Jones pinch hitting for Alex Milazzo. Jones fouls out to first base for the first out of the inning.
  • Crews hits a bomb into deep left field for a solo homerun. Arkansas leads 5-4
  • Paxton Kling pinch hitting for Josh Pearson. Kling strikes out swinging for the second out of the inning.
  • White hits a ground ball to short and Coll is there to make the play and end the game. ARKANSAS WINS 5-4!
