Razorback Basketball: Arkansas to host major transfer target

The race to gain the services of top transfer, Grant Nelson, will soon be underway today.

Nelson is currently the top available prospect in the transfer portal. The former North Dakota State forward entered the NBA Draft after a junior season that saw him produce the most of any season in his college career. During the period of time that he entered the draft conversation, Nelson also entered his name into the NCAA Transfer Portal. It was noted that Eric Musselman’s staff made contact briskly sharing their interest in the talented prospect.

Arkansas is in need of another player to fill the 13th scholarship spot to complete next season’s roster. Alabama was the first visit scheduled but the Baylor and Arkansas news followed soon after. As a first team All-Summit League star averaged 17.9 points and 9.3 rebounds per game last season. Nelson had a season-high 36 point outing against rival North Dakota on January 27.

At 6’11 235 pounds, he started all 30 games for the Bison during the 2022-23 season. He shot a career-high 52-percent from the field but his three point shooting fell off a tad at 27-percent. His ability to stretch the court would give Arkansas an interesting lineup if paired with fellow stretch forward Trevon Brazile.

The Razorbacks have already assembled a transfer class that currently ranks third in the nation, according to 247sports. Khalif Battle, Jeremiah Davenport, El Ellis, Tramon Mark and Keyon Menefield have all enrolled at Arkansas while getting acquainted with one another this weekend.

UPDATES

6-3-2023 at 9:53 PM: A source has told me that Arkansas will receive a visit from Nelson beginning on Thursday and Friday of this week.

6-7-2023 at 3:05 PM: Nelson should land in Arkansas around 5 PM today. He will begin his official visit soon after. After a couple of days spent in Alabama with Nate Oates and the rest of the Crimson Tide program there was no commitment to their basketball program.

Eric Musselman is one of the best in the business when it comes to closing the deal on commitments. Especially, when it comes to transfers the head hog is nearly automatic.

6-7-2023 6:40 PM: Nelson made it to Fayetteville and has started the visit process.
