While it’s been a rough few weeks for Hog fans, SEC football has been as entertaining as ever to watch. The conference as a whole is more competitive than it has been in years. Some quarterbacks have been excelling under their respective offensive schemes. Others have been falling in the SEC QB Power Rankings.
Unfortunately, that latter group includes KJ Jefferson. Despite Jefferson breaking some Razorback records this season, something just isn’t working with this Arkansas offense. Hopefully he and Dan Enos can pull it together before things go all the way off the rails. Next week against Ole Miss will be another crucial game for Arkansas. The offense has to focus on putting this last game behind them.
In other news, Brady Cook from Missouri is looking solid. Will Rogers continues to struggle at Mississippi State. Carson Beck appears increasingly comfortable each week for Georgia. How do these developments reflect in the latest SEC Quarterback Power Rankings?
SEC QB Power Rankings After Week 5
1. Jayden Daniels, LSU
27/36 passing, 414 yards, 4 TDs, 92.7 QBR
15 rushes, 99 yards, 1 TD
at Ole Miss- L 55-49
LSU and Ole Miss battled it out in a barn-burner. Both quarterbacks played tremendously. Jayden Daniels is finding open receivers with ease week in and week out.
2. Jaxson Dart, Ole Miss 2
26/39 passing, 389 yards, 4 TDs, 91.2 QBR
7 rushes, 50 yards, 1 TD
vs. LSU- W 55-49
Dart was able to top LSU and Daniels in this defenseless game. I think these two are without a doubt playing like the top two quarterbacks in the conference right now. For Jaxson Dart to surpass Daniels in these rankings, it’s going to take more performances like this.
3. Brady Cook, Missouri 2
33/41 passing, 395 yards, 4 TDs, 87.9 QBR
at Vanderbilt- W 38-21
The Missouri quarterback is playing well. Tiger fans hope this continues into the tougher part of the schedule.
4. Spencer Rattler, South Carolina1
24/35 passing, 169 yards, 1 INT, 33.6 QBR
11 rushes, 19 yards, 1 TD
at Tennessee- L 41-20
Offensive line issues are common in the SEC this year, huh? Rattler normally finds ways to deliver regardless, but was unable to against Tennessee.
5. Carson Beck, Georgia 1
23/33 passing, 313 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, 91.3 QBR
at Auburn- W 27-20
Confidence is key. Carson Beck is starting to look like an elite SEC quarterback. This was a stellar second half performance.
6. KJ Jefferson, Arkansas4
9/17 passing, 132 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, 20.7 QBR
vs. Texas A&M- L 34-22
When your offensive line struggles as immensely as Arkansas’ has, your quarterback cannot be expected to play well. Jefferson and his offense desperately need to claw their way out of this slump. If not, the next few weeks will be just as discouraging.
7. Max Johnson, Texas A&M
17/28 passing, 210 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT, 58.2 QBR
9 rushes, 57 yards
vs. Arkansas- W 34-22
Aside from a couple of botched reads, Johnson played fantastic against Arkansas. The Aggie play-calling was elite situationally. I wonder who was calling those plays for them…
8. Jalen Milroe, Alabama 2
10/12 passing, 164 yards, 96.8 QBR
11 rushes, 69 yards, 2 TDs
at Mississippi State- W 40-17
Alabama is tailoring the offense to the strengths of Jalen Milroe and the rest of their playmakers. It’s working out well.
9. Joe Milton III, Tennessee1
21/32 passing, 239 yards, 1 TD, 2 INTs, 45.3 QBR
vs. South Carolina- W 41-20
A win is a win. Tennessee’s offense isn’t as good as they thought it was.
10. Graham Mertz, Florida 1
25/30 passing, 244 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT, 57.6 QBR
at Kentucky- L 33-14
One of the few semi-bright spots for Florida on offense in the Kentucky game was Graham Mertz. A couple of successful key conversions for the Gators and this game could have been a lot closer.
11. Will Rogers, Mississippi State2
15/27 passing, 107 yards, 1 TD, 3 INTs, 19.1 QBR
vs. Alabama- L 40-17
Is it scheming? Or did Will Rogers regress from last season? Either way, the Bulldogs somehow might have a more dysfunctional offense than Arkansas.
12. Devin Leary, Kentucky
9/19 passing, 69 yards, 1 TD, 40.9 QBR
vs. Florida- W 33-14
Kentucky’s rushing attack was unstoppable. While Leary has struggled recently, he didn’t seem needed to win this game against a confusing Florida squad.
13. AJ Swann, Vanderbilt
Swann did not play due to injury sustained in the previous game. Yes, he still remains above Payton Thorne (for now).
vs. Missouri- L 38-21
14. Payton Thorne, Auburn
10/19 passing, 82 yards, 1 INT, 86.3 QBR
12 rushes, 92 yards
vs. Georgia- L 27-20
Robby Ashford deserves a chance. Giving credit where credit is due, Thorne played his best game in a few weeks against Georgia. Maybe things aren’t so bad for head coach Hugh Freeze in year one.
